A woman was killed and her niece injured after miscreants attacked them at their home in Joypurhat Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased, Nurunnahar Begum, 47, lived in Chirla village under Chak Barkat union. Her injured niece is Khatija Khatun, 16.
Nurunnahar’s elder brother, Abdul Matin, said they were informed by a relative over the phone that a gang of robbers broke into the house around 2am and attacked the two with sharp weapons, leaving them critically injured. When family members arrived, they found the victims unconscious and bleeding on the floor.
They were taken to Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital, but as their condition worsened, they were being transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura. Nurunnahar died on the way, he said.
Khatija is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Joypurhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Hossain said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and efforts are underway to identify those involved.
