Joint Secretary General and spokesperson of Islami Andolan Bangladesh Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman has stated that violence following an election held after the July mass uprising was not expected.
This was mentioned as part of a statement issued on Saturday.
“This is old politics, against which this election was held after a long struggle,” it stated. “The violence occurring in various parts of the country after an apparently beautiful election like the 13th national parliamentary election is undesirable. The government and the winning party must play an effective role in preventing this violence.”
The Islami Andolan leader further said that the interim government cannot remain inactive, and law enforcement agencies cannot give up. “The interim government must remain actively involved until the new government takes charge. Otherwise, the achievement of a violence-free national election will be diminished by post-election violence,” he said.
Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman said, “BNP has won the election. The responsibility of taking Bangladesh to a new dimension rests with them. If they fail to prevent post-election violence, it will be deemed a flaw from the outset, which will cause a loss of people’s trust in them. Therefore, I urge the BNP leaders to take prompt organisational action. Bring the concerned individuals and committees under accountability.”
