A supporter of an independent candidate was killed in post-election violence in Munshiganj on Friday, a day after the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
Md Jasim Nayeb, 30, supporter of independent candidate Md Mohiuddin, was attacked around noon in Char Abdullah village of Adhara Union in Sadar Upazila.
Nayeb, son of local resident Mafiq Nayeb, was severely beaten reportedly by supporters of BNP, witnesses said.
According to his elder brother, Md Moshiur Rahman, about 200 supporters of “Sheaf of Paddy”, led by Sakib, son of Nasir and a leader of the Swechchhasebak Dal, went to Nayeb’s home, verbally abused him, and assaulted him.
Nayeb was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but succumbed to his injuries around 7:30pm.
Munshiganj Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Billal Hossain confirmed that authorities are aware of the incident and an investigation is ongoing.
Nayeb was reportedly involved in managing a local madrasa.
The violence comes after the BNP-led alliance won more than two-thirds of seats nationally, while in Munshiganj-3, Md Mohiuddin, contesting with the football symbol as an independent, was defeated by BNP nominee Kamruzzaman Ratan.
This marks one of the first fatalities linked to post-election clashes in the district, raising concerns over election-related violence in the region.
