Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid his respects to the Liberation War martyrs at the National Martyrs’ Memorial on Wednesday.
After placing wreaths in honour of the fallen heroes, the newly appointed prime minister signed the memorial’s visitors’ book, officially recording his designation as “Honourable Prime Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.”
In his written remarks, PM Tarique said that after a period of “fascist rule and exploitation,” the pro-democracy people of Bangladesh have embarked on a new journey toward democracy through a free and fair election.
“Alhamdulillah, I express my gratitude to the Almighty,” he wrote.
The prime minister further noted that the new cabinet joins him in paying humble tribute to the martyrs of 1971, whose sacrifices gave birth to an independent Bangladesh, as well as those who laid down their lives in the 2024 uprising and in subsequent struggles to establish democracy.
“We believe the martyrs’ aspiration was the establishment of a safe, humane, democratic, independent, and sovereign Bangladesh,” he added, affirming that his administration has already begun work to realise this vision.
