Acclaimed Bangladeshi director and playwright Matia Banu Shuku is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, with her family appealing for government assistance as medical costs continue to rise.
Shuku, known for her work in television and theatre as well as her contribution as a producer on the National Film Award-winning film ‘Lal Moroger Jhuti’, was diagnosed with cancer around eight months ago. She has since been receiving treatment in Chennai, including regular chemotherapy sessions and ongoing medical care.
Her husband, filmmaker Nurul Alam Atique, described the situation as emotionally and financially overwhelming, noting that the industry offers no pension or long-term safety net for practitioners. He said the family has already travelled abroad for treatment and will need to continue follow-up care, with another appointment scheduled for April 23.
Atique also confirmed that friends and well-wishers have extended support during this period, but added that the treatment costs remain significant. He has appealed for government backing, saying sustained medical care will require long-term financial assistance.
Shuku has undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy and routine medical tests as part of her treatment plan. Her family has urged people to keep her in their thoughts as she continues her recovery journey.
Over the years, Shuku has built a strong reputation in Bangladeshi media with popular television productions such as ‘Gollachhut’, ‘To-Let’ and ‘Ekta Kinle Arekta Free’. She is the daughter of Language Movement veteran Abdul Matin.
