The factories in the Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Nilphamari will resume operations on Thursday after their two-day closure following the worker unrest.
However, the wig-making factory Evergreen will open on Saturday.
Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) confirmed the news after a discussion on Wednesday.
Abu Mohammad Soaem, a member of the district BNP, Dr Khairul Anam, Ameer of Nilphamari district Jamaat-e-Islami, and Abdul Majid, district convener of the SCP, informed the press that the talks were fruitful.
“As a result, all factories in the EPZ will open from Thursday morning, except for Evergreen, which will open on Saturday due to some preparations,” said Majid.
Nilphamari Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Nayiruzzaman said, “Factory owners, BEPZA officials, political leaders, and workers’ representatives were present at the meeting.”
Most of the workers’ demands were accepted by the factory owners. Therefore, all factories, except Evergreen, will open on Thursday, he added.
Uttara EPZ Executive Director Mohammad Abdul Jabbar also confirmed the information.
The Evergreen has recently laid off 51 workers, leading to protests, which resulted in the closure of the factory on Tuesday.
Around 6,000 to 7,000 workers blocked the main gate of the EPZ in a bid to press their demands, leading to a clash with law enforcers.
A worker, Habib Islam, was killed and some 24 others were injured in the sporadic clashes.
