An 18-year-old man died after falling from a horse-drawn carriage in New York City’s Central Park, authorities said on Wednesday.
According to AFP, New York police said the teenager suffered serious injuries after falling from the carriage. He was taken to hospital, where doctors later pronounced him dead.
Law enforcement officials said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Video footage circulated by local media showed a white carriage overturning after it apparently collided with another carriage. The reports said the horse pulling the carriage bolted after the driver got off, leading to the accident.
The incident came a week after a horse died in Central Park after eating a toxic plant, according to preliminary autopsy findings.
The continued operation of horse-drawn carriages in Central Park, a popular tourist destination in the United States, has long faced criticism from animal rights activists.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said he supports removing horse-drawn carriages from the park.
