A delegation led by United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen held a meeting with leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP), including its Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, on Wednesday.
The meeting took place at 12:30pm at the party’s central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka. The ambassador was accompanied by the embassy’s Political Advisor Eric Gillan and Political Secretary James Stewart.
The NCP delegation included party spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, Acting Head of the International Cell Alauddin Mohammad, and International Cell members Monira Sharmin and Navid Nowroz Shah.
Discussions centred on the future of Bangladeshi politics, democratic transition, the NCP’s political philosophy and bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the US.
Both sides exchanged views on strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation, highlighting the significance of the relationship for Bangladesh’s development within the current global economic and geopolitical framework.
A key point of discussion was the recent trade agreement. NCP leaders raised questions and concerns currently prevailing among the public regarding the deal.
In response, the US delegation provided clarifications and urged a serious review of the agreement, expressing confidence that it would create new opportunities for economic cooperation and deliver positive outcomes for the people of both nations.
The meeting also addressed the progress of necessary reforms following the referendum verdict and the implementation of the “July Charter”.
During the talks, NCP leaders voiced concern over the government’s initiative to implement reforms through a Constitution Reform Committee, suggesting that this approach does not give due importance to the referendum’s mandate.
Christensen emphasised the importance of advancing democratic progress and reforms through inclusive political dialogue, participatory processes and the engagement of all relevant stakeholders.
Following the meeting, Nahid expressed optimism that mutual cooperation, friendly relations and constructive dialogue between Bangladesh and the United States would continue in the future.
