Indian Premier League side Chennai Super Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday after Urvil Patel smashed a joint-fastest fifty in IPL history. The Chennai batter reached his half-century in 13 balls during a chase of 204.
Patel walked in at number three and attacked from the start. He struck two fours and eight sixes in a 23-ball 65 that broke the chase open inside the powerplay. The innings matched the IPL record set by Yashasvi Jaiswal against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023 while playing for Rajasthan Royals.
Lucknow posted 203 for eight after losing the toss. Chennai still faced work late in the innings, but Shivam Dube finished the chase with authority. Aiden Markram opened the final over with two no-balls before Dube launched consecutive sixes to seal victory with four balls remaining.
The defeat ended Lucknow’s playoff hopes. They now sit bottom of the table with six points from 11 matches after eight defeats. Mumbai Indians also hold six points but stay above Lucknow on net run rate.
The IPL’s second-fastest fifty still stands at 14 balls. KL Rahul, Pat Cummins and Romario Shepherd share that mark. Earlier this season, Vaibhav Suryavanshi hit three 15-ball fifties for Rajasthan.
