A mobile court has sentenced a Union Parishad (UP) member to 15 days in jail for illegally stockpiling diesel in Sadar upazila of Chuadanga.
The drive took place from 5:30pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday at Amirpur village under Mominpur union.
Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Aminul Islam led the mobile court, with support from Sadar Police Station. The team conducted a raid at the residence of UP member Shahinur Islam.
During the operation, the court found that Shahinur had stored five barrels of diesel, around 1,000 litres, at his house. Officials said he intended to sell the fuel at higher prices.
The court convicted him under the Consumer Rights Protection Act. It handed him 15 days of simple imprisonment and fined him Tk20,000.
Officials said the seized diesel has been kept at the UNO office.
