Ukhiya Upazila Bangladesh Tati League president Aminul Haque Amin, also known as Batta Amin, was detained on Thursday morning by an army-led joint force.
He is accused of assaulting an elderly supporter Jamaat-e-Islami, after publicly distributing cash at a polling centre.
The incident occurred at Paglir Bil polling centre in Holdiapalong Union.
Ukhiya police officer-in-charge Nur Ahmed confirmed the detention, adding that Amin has not yet been handed over to the police.
“The army detained him, but we have not received him,” he said.
Earlier, a video circulated on social media showing Amin distributing cash in favour of the BNP candidate, fuelling allegations of vote buying. Thursday’s assault allegation has further intensified scrutiny over the conduct at the polling centre.
The incident has raised concerns about electoral integrity in the upazila, as authorities maintain heightened security during the ongoing Election.
