BNP has suspended the organisational posts of two local leaders in Babuganj upazila of Barishal following allegations of extortion and a subsequent incident of mob justice.
The suspension was confirmed on Tuesday morning through a formal notice issued on the letterhead of Chandpasha Union BNP. The notice, signed by Union BNP President Alamgir Hossain Swapan and General Secretary Md Shahin Hossain, said the decision was taken over “anti-organisational activities”.
The suspended leaders were identified as Mehedi Hasan Zakir Molla, president of Ward No 2 BNP and also organisational secretary of Chandpasha Union BNP, and Abdur Razzak, organisational secretary of Ward No 2 BNP.
According to local sources, the incident took place on Monday night in the Raintreetola area of Chandpasha Union. It is alleged that the two leaders demanded Tk20,000 in extortion from a local sand trader.
Following the allegation, locals reportedly detained the duo and subjected them to a mob beating before releasing them after they gave a written undertaking.
In response to the incident, the party directed all levels of leaders and activists to sever organisational contact with the two individuals.
It also said that Zakir Molla and Abdur Razzak would be barred from all party activities until further notice.
