Teachers at Barishal University continued their complete shutdown programme for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, suspending all academic and administrative activities on the campus.
The teachers are demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor and promotion of teachers.
Students said they were suffering due to the disruption of academic activities and hoped the crisis would be resolved quickly.
The protesting teachers alleged that recruitment and promotion processes at the university have remained stalled for a long time, affecting the academic environment.
Barishal University Vice-Chancellor Toufik Alam said there was no scope to promote teachers outside the regulations set by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
“The teachers are not accepting the existing provisions and are demanding promotions under the previous rules. This is not within my jurisdiction,” he said.
The vice-chancellor said efforts were underway to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the university is scheduled to begin its Eid vacation on Thursday and reopen in the first week of next month.
The protesting teachers warned that the shutdown would continue even after the holidays if their demands are not met.
