Thomas Dooley resigned as Guyana head coach on 12 May, three days before the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) reveals its new manager. The 64-year-old German-American left his post after nine months despite maintaining an unbeaten record. He cited a desire for new challenges as the reason for his departure.
Dooley remains a primary candidate on the BFF’s 11-man shortlist to replace Javier Cabrera. The former Bundesliga winner previously led the Philippines to their first Asian Cup appearance. He also served as assistant coach to Jurgen Klinsmann with the United States national team.
His tenure in Guyana provides a mixed outlook for the BFF. Dooley secured results on the pitch, yet his firm disciplinary approach sparked conflict with several local players. This history suggests he offers tactical improvement but carries the risk of squad friction if he takes the Dhaka job.
BFF President Tabith Awal is personally directing the final stages of the recruitment process. The federation aims to appoint a coach with extensive experience in Asian football to oversee the upcoming international window.
“Thomas Dooley is on our shortlist,” said Kamrul Islam Hilton, chairman of the BFF technical committee. “Now the matter of coach appointment is entirely being looked after by the President himself. I know he will announce on 15 May.”
The President’s decision to lead the final negotiations himself signals that the BFF views this appointment as a high-level priority. Direct presidential oversight suggests the federation wants a quick resolution before the national team begins its next training camp.
