Voter turnout in Sylhet Division stood at 44 percent, representing the lowest participation rate among all divisions in the country.

According to data released by the Returning Officer’s office at 6pm on Thursday, the region saw marked reluctance among voters to visit polling stations despite the strict presence of law enforcement.

While some urban centres appeared deserted in the morning, a stronger turnout was observed in areas dominated by tea workers and minority communities. Attendance reportedly saw a slight increase as the day progressed.

Despite the peaceful atmosphere, some irregularities were reported from several centres. In Companiganj, police detained two persons for attempting to cast fake votes at Borni Government Primary School and Ranikhai Humayun Rashid Chowdhury High School.

Companiganj Police Station’s Officer-in-charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam confirmed their release, saying, “They were released later as they were children.”
