A local Swechchasebak Dal leader has been expelled in Netrokona over allegations of leading a mob attack on Detective Branch police during an anti-smuggling drive.

Mamun Mia, Member Secretary of Rongchhati Union Swechchasebak Dal, was removed from his post on Thursday for breaching party discipline and involvement in social disorder, party sources said.

The decision was approved by Kalmakanda Upazila Swechchasebak Dal Convener Anwar Hossain Azad and Member Secretary Yasin Arafat and confirmed in a letter signed by Netrokona Upazila Swechchasebak Dal 1st Joint-Convener Md Jahangir Alam.

According to police and party sources, the incident took place on Tuesday night in the border area of Rongchhati union under Kalmakanda upazila.

Netrokona District Detective Branch police were conducting a special operation against smuggling and narcotics when an organised group allegedly formed a mob and obstructed the drive.

The attackers reportedly assaulted the officers and locked them inside a room.

Members of the Detective Branch were later rescued by a team from Kalmakanda Police Station.

Mamun Mia, a resident of Daiyarkanda village, has been arrested and sent to Netrokona District Jail.

He faces charges of obstructing government duty, forming an unlawful mob, assault and alleged involvement in smuggling and drug-related activities.

Kalmakanda Upazila Swechchasebak Dal Convener Anwar Hossain Azad said the BNP and its associate bodies do not tolerate any action that harms party discipline or image.

He said Mamun Mia has been relieved of organisational duties following the case and further action may be taken depending on the progress of the investigation.
