A devastating fire broke out at a jhut (garment waste) warehouse in the Jamgara Tetultala area of Ashulia, Savar on Friday night, rapidly spreading to four adjoining jhut warehouses and a nearby house.
According to local sources, residents first noticed the blaze around 10pm at a jhut warehouse owned by Alauddin and Babul Miah. As the intensity of the fire mounted rapidly, panic spread across the surrounding area, prompting locals to inform the Fire Service.
Upon receiving the information, two units from the Jirabo Fire Service quickly arrived at the scene and began firefighting operations.
However, before firefighters could reach the site, the blaze had already grown in intensity and engulfed four neighbouring jhut warehouses along with an adjacent residence, leaving a total of five jhut warehouses and a house damaged.
At around 11:30pm, two units from the DEPZ Fire Service joined the operation, bringing the total number of firefighting units working at the spot to four. No casualties have been reported in the incident so far.
Senior Station Officer of Jirabo Fire Service, Shahabuddin, stated that the fire is suspected to have spread rapidly due to the presence of a huge quantity of highly flammable materials in the jhut warehouses.
He noted that the origin of the fire could not be confirmed immediately and added that fire service personnel are working continuously to bring the blaze under control.
Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, Torikul Islam, said police personnel are working at the location to maintain law and order.
