The administration of Shaheed Farhad Hossain Hall at Chittagong University (CU) has completely banned smoking inside the hall premises, warning that disciplinary action will be taken against anyone violating the directive.
According to an urgent notice signed by the hall’s Provost, Prof HS Farooq Alam, on Thursday, smoking is strictly prohibited across all locations within the hall, including the main gate, guest room, balcony, staircase, and corridors.
The directive was issued to ensure that the hall environment remains clean, tidy, and healthy. The hall administration specified that the order applies to resident students, officers, employees, and all relevant individuals, adding that necessary punitive measures will be enforced for non-compliance.
Explaining the background, Hall Union Vice President (VP) Shariful Islam said that although the consumption of cigarettes and other tobacco products inside the hall was prohibited, some students were recently seen smoking near the main gate, surrounding areas, and corridors on different floors.
He added that multiple complaints were raised regarding the disruption caused to the hall environment and the daily lives of resident students, leading students to request a resolution from the hall administration.
Reiterating the hall administration’s position, hall provost said that cautionary notices had been issued previously on the matter. “Smoking in public places is a serious offence. Smoking inside the hall has been banned, and disciplinary action will be taken if the order is disobeyed,” he affirmed.
