Bangladesh is generating substantially less electricity than its power plants are built to produce across gas, coal, and liquid fuel sources, parliamentary figures revealed on Saturday.

While the country’s gas-based power generation capacity stands at 12,022 megawatts (MW), actual production ranges between 4,000MW and 5,000MW.

Similarly, against a coal-based generation capacity of 6,927MW, actual generation sits at 5,000MW to 6,000MW, while liquid fuel-based plants produce 2,500MW to 3,000MW against an installed capacity of 6,409MW.

These statistics were disclosed during the first meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, held at the Parliament under the chairmanship of Committee Chairman Mia Nuruddin Ahamed Apu.

The meeting reviewed the operational activities and budget allocations of the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.

It was reported that Power Division has 41 ongoing development projects under Annual Development Programme (ADP) for 2026–27 fiscal year.

Funding allocations for these projects include Tk10,653 crore in project assistance, Tk4,071.39 crore from government funds, and Tk3,381.80 crore from the organisations’ own resources.

The committee was also updated on rooftop solar power incentives. Consumers installing rooftop solar systems by 28 February 2027 will receive Tk10.50 per unit for surplus electricity supplied to the national grid until 28 February 2030.

The committee recommended that data showing the exact volume of electricity added to the grid from rooftop solar panels be presented at its next session. A written paper outlining several key questions was submitted on behalf of the committee, with a recommendation for detailed answers to be provided at the upcoming meeting.

Attending members of the committee included Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hassan Mahmood, State Minister Aninda Islam Amit, Mohammad Kaisar Ahmed, Rafiqul Islam Hilali, SM Jahangir Hossain, Nayab Yusuf Ahmed, Momtaz Alo, Mohammad Nazibur Rahman, and Md Abul Hasnat.

The secretary of the ministry, department heads, and senior officials of Secretariat were also present.
