A drive under the Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign in Chandpur Sadar upazila led to the seizure of 30kg of Hilsa fish and 10,000 metres of banned current nets. Two fish wholesalers were fined Tk10,000 in total for illegally storing Hilsa.
The four-hour operation was conducted on Saturday from 5am to 9am. Md Najmul Huda, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate at the District Commissioner’s Office, led the operation.
Members of the Sadar Upazila Fisheries Department, Coast Guard and River Police took part in the joint drive. The team conducted operations at several locations across Chandpur Sadar upazila, including Rongowal, Dokanghor, Bahuria, Harina, the Alubazar Ferighat canal, Akhoner Ghat, Nandi Ghat, Rajrajeshwar and the Boro Station fish market.
During the raid, two wholesalers at the Boro Station fish market, Md Selim and Md Rafiq, were fined Tk5,000 each. They were fined for illegally hoarding Hilsa, bringing the total fine to Tk10,000.
Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mirza Omar Faruq confirmed the details of the operation at around 10am.
He said necessary legal action would be taken regarding the seized current nets and Hilsa fish. He also added that the district and upazila task forces would continue their drives to protect mother Hilsa.
