The 2,400-megawatt (MW) Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will meet approximately 11 per cent of Bangladesh’s total electricity demand once operational, Minister for Science and Technology Faqir Mahbub Anam has said.
The minister highlighted the plant’s capacity following a high-level bilateral meeting in Moscow with Alexey Likhachev, director general of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation, Rosatom, on Friday.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology, detailed discussions were held regarding the overall progress of Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant and the timeline for power generation from its first unit.
During the meeting, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev promised that an experimental power connection to the national grid from the first unit, featuring a VVER-1200 reactor, will be ensured within the shortest possible time.
Likhachev stated that the project will play a crucial role in guaranteeing power security for Bangladesh while providing eco-friendly and affordable energy.
He also informed that commissioning and initial start-up activities for the second unit will commence next year.
Moreover, positive discussions took place regarding the future expansion of the nuclear energy sector and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation by drawing upon the success and experience of the Rooppur project.
