Bangladesh were bowled out for 64, their third-lowest total in Test cricket, as Mitchell Starc led Australia’s attack in the second Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
Bangladesh’s resistance lasted only 11 overs after lunch. Having gone into the interval at 35 for six, they added just four more runs before losing three wickets.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the first to depart, caught by Beau Webster at slip off Pat Cummins for 11 from 51 balls. Hasan Mahmud followed, edging Josh Hazlewood to Nathan Lyon at leg slip for 10 from 36 balls.
With Bangladesh nine wickets down for 39, it was only a matter of time before the innings ended. Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam, however, added some late runs to take the total to 64.
Shoriful scored 14 from 19 balls before becoming the 10th batter dismissed, while Taijul remained unbeaten on 11 from 26 balls. The pair struck five boundaries between them.
Bangladesh arrived in Mackay after a nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin, giving them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. A draw in the second Test would have secured a historic series win.
Australia captain Pat Cummins chose to bowl after winning the toss and was rewarded immediately. Starc removed Shadman Islam with the first ball of the innings before dismissing Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Mominul Haque, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das.
Bangladesh were reduced to 12 for five inside the first seven overs, with Starc taking all five wickets.
The left-arm pacer finished with six for 12 from 10 overs, while Cummins claimed three wickets. Australia’s bowlers never allowed Bangladesh to recover from the early collapse, and the visitors were dismissed in 34 overs.
