Bangladesh have reached sixth place in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings for the first time in their history.
Bangladesh moved up three places following their two Test series against Australia.
The latest rankings show Bangladesh in sixth with 1,878 points from 24 matches. They have a rating of 78.
They are now ahead of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and Zimbabwe.
Australia remain at the top with a rating of 126. South Africa are second with 119. New Zealand, India and England complete the top five.
Bangladesh’s rise came after they drew the Test series in Australia 1-1.
The Tigers started the series with a historic nine wicket win in Darwin. It was Bangladesh’s first Test victory on Australian soil and only their second Test win against Australia.
Hasan Mahmud played a major role in that win. He took nine wickets in the match, including six in Australia’s first innings.
Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored 101, while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made 84. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also made an impact with both bat and ball.
Australia responded strongly in the second Test in Mackay.
Mitchell Starc took 10 wickets in the match as Australia won by an innings and 51 runs. The result levelled the series at 1-1.
Shoriful Islam also made history in Mackay. The left arm pacer took seven wickets in Australia’s innings.
Bangladesh could not repeat their Darwin success in the second Test. But their result in the series against the world’s top ranked Test side helped them reach a new high in the rankings.
Bangladesh received Test status in 2000. More than two decades later, they have now reached sixth place for the first time.
The achievement adds another historic moment to their tour of Australia. Bangladesh returned home without the series trophy, but with a historic win in Darwin, a drawn series and their highest ever Test ranking.
