The hearing on charge framing against former law minister Anisul Huq in an arms case has been deferred. The court has fixed 24 September as the next date for proceedings.
Judge Moin Uddin Chowdhury of Dhaka’s Special Tribunal‑4 passed the order after Anisul’s counsel sought more time. The accused was produced in the court from prison during the session on Sunday.
Defence counsel Suman Hossain said, “We still need to collect certain case documents. For that reason, we sought time from the court. The court granted our request and set 24 September as the next date for hearing.”
The firearm over which the case was filed is actually Anisul Huq’s licensed weapon, he added. “The relevant documents will be produced on the next scheduled hearing date,” he also said.
Police arrested Anisul on 13 August 2024 from Sadarghat in Dhaka, eight days after the fall of the Awami League government in the July mass uprising. He was remanded in several murder and attempted‑murder cases.
The case was filed at Banani Police Station on 24 May last year during the interim government period led by former chief adviser Muhammad Yunus. Sub-inspector Md Jane Alam Dulal lodged the case, and after investigation police submitted a charge sheet accusing Anisul.
Case records state that the accused owned a licensed pistol under Banani Police Station. The Ministry of Home Affairs suspended all firearm licenses issued for personal security from 6 January 2009 to 5 August 2024, directing holders to submit their firearms by 3 September 2024.
However, Anisul neither deposited his weapon at the station nor informed police by 5 May 2025. No one was found at his address, and no information was available regarding the deposit of the weapon. Records also show he did not purchase ammunition.
The prosecution alleges that Anisul thereby committed an offence under provisions of the Arms Act of 1878.
