Standard Chartered Bangladesh and UK Export Finance (UKEF) are working to expand access to UK-backed financing for Bangladeshi exporters as the country seeks to diversify its export base and strengthen links with global supply chains.

The bank and the UK government’s export credit agency convened a roundtable in Dhaka on Sunday with representatives from pharmaceuticals, light engineering, agribusiness, seafood and footwear industries to discuss opportunities for trade finance, export credit and investment support. The discussions focused on how UKEF-backed financing could help Bangladeshi companies access UK suppliers, technology and capital, while supporting projects linked to infrastructure development, sustainability and industrial upgrading.

Bangladesh, whose export earnings have historically depended heavily on the garment sector, is looking to expand higher-value industries as it prepares for the next stage of economic growth.
Sectors including pharmaceuticals, engineering, agricultural processing and manufacturing have been identified as areas with potential to increase global competitiveness.
“Standard Chartered has been a partner in Bangladesh’s growth story for over 120 years,” said Enamul Huque, CEO of Standard Chartered Bangladesh.

“As the country advances towards its next phase of development, deepening trade and investment ties with strategic partners such as the United Kingdom will be critical.”
He said collaboration with UKEF would help connect Bangladeshi businesses with UK expertise, technology and financing solutions, enabling companies to modernise operations and improve productivity. UKEF representatives used the roundtable to hear directly from Bangladeshi businesses about financing needs and explore areas where UK suppliers and export finance could support future projects.

Standard Chartered said it aims to act as a bridge between Bangladeshi corporates, financial institutions and public-sector entities and UK companies seeking opportunities in the market.
The initiative comes as Bangladesh works to attract more investment, diversify exports and strengthen its role in international trade. The bank said partnerships with institutions such as UKEF would support sustainable growth and help businesses align with global standards.
