Police recovered the decomposed hanging body of a youth from a locked room in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Rabiu Islam, 30, son of Salam Molla of Bazarpara area in Uthli village.
Police found the body from a room near Uthli Bazar railway station after receiving a call through the national emergency service 999.
Local traders said they noticed a strong foul smell coming from the area throughout the day. They informed the authorities around 11:30pm, following which a team from Jibannagar Police Station arrived at midnight and recovered the body from the locked room.
Rabiu had been living in the Bazarpara area of Uthli for a long time. He earned his living through various jobs but had reportedly been suffering from mental health issues recently. According to locals, his wife, children and mother had left him, after which he had been living alone.
Police suspect that he may have died by suicide about a week ago.
Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Solaiman Sheikh said police saw the body hanging inside the locked room through a gap in the door after reaching the spot.
“Later, we opened the door and recovered the body. Most parts of the body had decomposed and a strong smell was coming from it. We cannot confirm the cause of death yet, but we suspect he died by suicide around a week ago,” he said.
The body will be sent to the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, the police official added.
