After more than three decades in music, Bappa Mazumder has built a strong following through his solo songs, band performances and concerts. He formed the band Dalchhut with the late Sanjeeb Chowdhury, and the group will mark its 30th anniversary this November. Mazumder has also won two National Film Awards for his work as a composer and singer in film music.
The musician will share untold stories from his musical career and personal life in a 100-minute episode of the popular podcast Behind the Fame with RRK. Hosted by Rumman Rashid Khan, the special episode will air on Saturday, 31 October, at 9pm on Maasranga Television and Radio Dinraat 93.6 FM.
During the conversation, Mazumder recalled that he began playing guitar professionally soon after his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations. His first payment came from playing guitar at Hotel Sonargaon, where he earned Tk 50. He spent Tk 20 on a baby taxi to return home and used the remaining money to buy 1.5kg of sweets for his family from Alauddin Sweetmeat. The second time he received payment, he handed the Tk 200 to his mother.
Alongside these early memories, Mazumder spoke candidly about why he has worked on relatively few film songs despite entering the industry around 20 years ago. He said professional connections play a major role in securing such work, an area in which he feels he falls short.
“You need to maintain contacts to get work on film songs. I am very poor at that. If you cannot maintain those connections, your chances of working on film songs become limited,” he said.
Mazumder is known as a music director, composer, singer and lyricist. ZI Faisal is producing the podcast.
