Funeral prayers for six people from the same village, killed in a road accident in Tangail’s Kalihati, were held together before they were buried side by side in Naogaon’s Manda upazila on Tuesday.
The burial took place at Rajendrabati village at around 10:40am after their janaza. The victims’ bodies were brought to the village early Tuesday morning after post-mortem examinations at Tangail General Hospital and handed over to their families by the Tangail district police on Monday evening around 7:30pm.
Local sources said that although 10 people from Naogaon died in the same accident, the janaza of six victims were held together in Rajendrabati village. The remaining four victims were buried in separate ceremonies at their respective villages early in the morning.
On Tuesday morning, the atmosphere in Rajendrabati village turned grief-stricken as coffins were brought in from surrounding areas. Six coffins were lined up side by side according to religious rites before burial. People from neighbouring villages and relatives gathered to catch a final glimpse of the victims. The area was filled with cries and mourning.
Senior government officials and local leaders attended the janaza, including Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner ANM Bazlur Rashid, Rajshahi Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan, Naogaon-4 MP Dr Ekramul Bari Tipu, Naogaon-1 MP Mostafizur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam, Manda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Akhtar Jahan Sathi and Manda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khorshed Alam.
Thousands of people from nearby villages also joined the prayers.
Divisional Commissioner Bazlur Rashid said the district administration had already provided Tk25,000 and dry food assistance to each bereaved family. He described the incident as deeply tragic and said the administration would continue to support the affected families.
He added that the loss of six people from a single village was heartbreaking and left everyone in mourning.
The accident occurred on Monday around 4am on the Dhaka–Tangail highway at Saratail Southpara in Kalihati, when a rod-laden truck overturned, killing 15 people. Ten of the deceased were from Naogaon.
Among them, seven were from Rajendrabati village in Manda upazila, two from Pakuria village and one from Niamatpur upazila. The victims were returning home to celebrate Eid with their families.
The deceased from Naogaon were identified as Sakin Mia’s son Md Sagar Mia,20, Shahidul Islam’s son Robiul Islam, 25, Abdus Rashid’s son Md Barik, 21, Abdur Rahim’s son Badsha, 32, Rashed’s son Gias, 20 and his brother Mainul, 28 of Pakuria village, Ekabbar Ali’s son Yakub, 20, Sultan’s son Tarak, 20, Jafar’s son Mainul, 35, and Sujan, 35 of Ramga area in Niamatpur upazila.
