At least 15 people were killed and nine others injured when a truck loaded with iron rods overturned and plunged into a roadside ditch in Soratoil area of Tangail’s Kalihati upazila early Monday.
Tangail Additional Superintendent of Police Fauzia Habib confirmed the incident.
Of the 15 people killed in the accident so far, six have been identified. They are Md Sagar Mia, 20, Rabiul Islam, 25, Sarikul, 25, Ismail Hossain, 19, Nazrul, 60, and Mamun, 45.
Fire service and police said they were believed to be residents of Chapainawabganj. The crash occurred around 4:30am.
Fauzia said the north Bengal bound truck carrying day labourers departed from Chattogram. It veered out of control in Soratoil before falling into the ditch.
Elenga Fire Service Station Officer Atowar Rahman said rescue operations began immediately. “We recovered 15 bodies from the scene. The injured were rescued and admitted to Tangail General Hospital,” he added.
Deputy Director of Tangail General Hospital Sadikur Rahman said that 15 bodies had been brought to the hospital. He said nine injured people were admitted, of whom four left after receiving treatment, while the remaining five are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
