Electioneering began on Monday in Sherpur-3 and the Bogura-6 by-election as the Election Commission (EC) distributed symbols to contesting candidates.
A total of six candidates, three in each constituency, are in the fray, Returning Officers of the two constituencies told BSS.
Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, Returning Officer of Sherpur-3, said BNP candidate Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel will contest with the “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol. Jamaat-e-Islami nominee Md Masudur Rahman will run under the “Daripalla” symbol, while a candidate from Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist) will use the “Scissors” symbol.
The Sherpur-3 election, originally scheduled for 12 February, was postponed following the death of the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate. The EC later announced a revised schedule.
In Bogura-6, Returning Officer Md Fazlul Karim confirmed three candidates have been allotted election symbols. BNP’s Md Rezaul Karim Badsha will contest with the “Sheaf of Paddy,” Jamaat-e-Islami’s Md Abidur Rahman with the “Daripalla,” and a Bangladesh Development Party candidate with the “Cauliflower” symbol. He added that the election atmosphere in the constituency is calm and orderly.
The Bogura-6 seat became vacant after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman relinquished it, retaining Dhaka-17 following his dual constituency wins on 12 February. EC later declared the seat vacant and set a new election schedule.
According to the EC timetable, voting in the Bogura-6 by-poll and the Sherpur-3 parliamentary election will take place on 9 April from 7:30am to 4:30pm without a break.
