Stray Kids has become the latest major K-pop act to sit out the Grammy Awards, with JYP Entertainment confirming that the group did not submit any music for consideration at the 69th ceremony, writes The Korea Times.
The decision comes as the Recording Academy moves ahead with its new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, despite criticism over the separate recognition for Asian pop.
The category, announced earlier this year, is intended to recognise contemporary Asian popular music, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop.
Critics, however, have argued that placing these genres in a separate category could limit Asian artists’ opportunities to compete across the Grammys’ wider fields.
BTS had already announced that it would not submit music for consideration, saying music should be appreciated without being divided by region or language. Stray Kids’ decision now adds another prominent name to the boycott.
The group has topped the Billboard 200 nine times and all eight members are Recording Academy voting members.
ATEEZ member Hongjoong has also expressed sympathy for BTS’ position, saying he agreed “a little” with the group’s decision.
