Journalist Mahmuda Chowdhury and filmmaker Mejbaur Rahman Sumon have been selected for the Fazlul Haque Memorial Award 2026 for their contributions to Bangladesh’s film and media landscape.
The awards will be handed over on 26 October at a programme at the Channel i studio, marking the death anniversary of pioneering film journalist Fazlul Haque. Each winner will receive prize money, a certificate and a crest.
Mahmuda started her journalism career with the weekly ‘Begum’ in 1978 and later spent around 15 years at ‘Bichitra’ before joining the Daily Dinkal. She has also written two books, including ‘Zahir Raihaner Cholochitro: Shomaj Bhabna’.
Sumon rose to prominence through television fiction and advertisements before moving into filmmaking. His films ‘Hawa’ and ‘Roid’ gained audiences in Bangladesh and abroad. ‘Roid’ was selected as Bangladesh’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.
The award was introduced in 2004 by Fazlul Haque’s widow, Rabeya Khatun, and has since honoured a filmmaker and film journalist each year.
