Ousted prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep condolences over the death of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, describing her passing as a significant loss to Bangladesh’s political landscape.
In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, Sheikh Hasina acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s contribution to the country’s democratic journey, particularly highlighting her role as Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister and her involvement in the struggle to establish democracy.
Sheikh Hasina’s message was shared on the official X account of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned.
In the statement, she said, “I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia,” the statement said.
“As the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and for her role in the struggle to establish democracy, her contributions to the nation were significant and will be remembered. Her passing represents a profound loss for Bangladesh’s political life and for the leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,” it added.
“I pray for the eternal peace and forgiveness of Begum Khaleda Zia’s soul. I convey my sincere sympathies to her son, Tarique Rahman, and to the members of her bereaved family. I also extend my condolences to the wider BNP family. I hope that Almighty Allah grants them patience, strength, and comfort to endure this difficult time,” it added.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy expresses deep condolences
Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who was information and technology adviser to Sheikh Hasina, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family members following the death of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, also three-time former prime minister.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, he said, “Deep condolences to bereaved family members on the demise of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. At such a critical time when countrymen are reeling from lack of safety with efforts are underway to destabilise and depoliticise the country, her passing away will leave a deep impact on the country’s transition.”
“Despite subjected to depoliticisation process in the past, throughout her political career she achieved a host of successes and shaped several policies for the country,” said Joy, son of Sheikh Hasina.
He added, “She will be remembered for her contributions in nation building but her death is a blow to stabilize Bangladesh.”
Concluding his message, Joy wrote, “Heartfelt prayers with her countless supporters and well-wishers.”
