Jamaat‑e‑Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman has expressed dissatisfaction over a meeting between US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor and India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi.
“The meeting between Gor and Trivedi was unexpected. In a democratic country, such meetings are not desirable,” he said.
He added, “If the meeting was not merely a courtesy call but involved any issue related to Bangladesh, then such discussions should rightly be held with the Bangladesh government.”
Shafiqur also said that opposition political parties could also be consulted if necessary.
He made the remarks Saturday in Sylhet while attending the 34th anniversary event of local daily Jalalabad.
The Jamaat chief also raised concern over recent Election Commission steps, saying a party‑affiliated individual who retired years ago had been given responsibility in the commission, which “raises questions.”
He criticised the BNP’s position on the referendum, saying, “The party has shifted from its earlier stance. Previously everyone supported a referendum, but later BNP changed its position. The people want to know why.”
Rahman further urged the Prime Minister to adopt a tougher stance against corruption, extortion, and irregularities within the ruling party.
