US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor said American investors are keen to hold a US Investor Summit in Dhaka soon, an initiative he himself is pursuing.
He made the comment in response to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s call on Saturday for sustained US investment in Bangladesh, highlighting opportunities in agriculture and information technology.
Gor added that Washington would work positively to expand investment cooperation through the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
The meeting took place at 9:30am at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, according to the Prime Minister’s Press Wing.
During the talks, Gor praised Prime Minister Tarique’s leadership, saying stability was returning to Bangladesh under his guidance.
He noted that the US had positively revised its travel advisory for Bangladesh, which he said would send a strong signal to investors that the country was ready for business.
The two sides also discussed the upcoming visit of a US‑Bangladesh Business Council delegation next month.
The meeting further covered expansion of cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Gor assured he would help restart FDA testing activities in Bangladesh.
Tarique urged US investment in warehousing, soybean, cotton, wheat and other agricultural sectors to build a competitive supply chain. He also highlighted Bangladesh’s special interest in IT investment, which Gor acknowledged as a sector of significant potential.
Bangladesh’s Rohingya support
The Rohingya crisis was also discussed. Gor shared impressions from his visit to the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps the previous day, praising Bangladesh for sheltering refugees and continuing humanitarian support.
Tarique said more than half of international assistance for the Rohingyas comes from the United States, expressing gratitude to the US government and people.
Gor stressed the need for a swift, sustainable political solution to the crisis, calling for coordinated efforts with ASEAN neighbours and other stakeholders.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, State Minister Shyama Obaid, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir, and advisers Rehan Asif Asad and Mahadi Amin were present at the meeting. US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen also attended.
Gor arrived in Dhaka Thursday on a three‑day trip, his first since assuming his new role as Special Envoy for South and Central Asia.
