The International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) has been named Bangladesh’s top sustainable university in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2026, securing the country’s first position for the second consecutive year and ranking 113th in Asia and 197th globally.
The rankings were announced on 24 September 2026 at an international ceremony in Baku, Azerbaijan, hosted by Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University. The 17th edition assessed 2,016 universities and higher education institutions from 110 countries, making it the largest edition in UI GreenMetric’s history.
Published by Universitas Indonesia since 2010, the UI GreenMetric rankings assess the implementation of green campus initiatives and sustainability policies at universities worldwide. The 2026 assessment covered seven areas — Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Management, Transportation, Education and Research, and Governance and Digitalisation.
Other top-ranked Bangladeshi universities in the index include Daffodil International University in second place, BRAC University in third, World University of Bangladesh in fourth, Bangladesh University of Business and Technology in fifth, American International University-Bangladesh in sixth and State University of Bangladesh in seventh.
“This recognition is the result of the long-standing collective efforts of our students, faculty, and staff. We will continue moving forward with our commitment to building a sustainable and environmentally friendly campus,” Professor Selina Nargis, Treasurer of IUBAT, said in a statement.
Founded in 1991, IUBAT is among the first private universities in Bangladesh. Its founder, educationist Dr. M. Alimullah Miyan, was a professor at the University of Dhaka and former director of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA).
The university declared itself a “Green Campus” in 2008 as part of its environmental development efforts. Its initiatives in greening, waste management and sustainable campus development have since gained international recognition, according to the university.
