Nahid Islam, the convenor of National Citizen Party (NCP), has alleged that despite ongoing attacks, conspiracies, and misdeeds by the Awami League, the government has failed to take appropriate action.
Nahid added, “When Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam was attacked, we had already stated that the leaders of the mass uprising were being targeted, and information has now come to light regarding the involvement of officials at various levels of the administration in this attack.
“The security arrangements were incomplete, which led to a repeat of Monday’s incident.”
The NCP convener further stated, “We demand accountability from the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs because they have failed to ensure the safety of our leaders accompanying Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on his visit.
“This is not an isolated incident. The Awami League is creating instability both inside and outside the country through various activities. Negative campaigns and propaganda are being spread against the leaders of the mass uprising, members of martyr families, and the injured through cyber means, which is part of the ongoing series of attacks.”
Nahid then said, “The NCP has long been demanding a fair trial for the July massacre. Recent attacks clearly prove why the National Citizen Party considers the Awami League a terrorist organisation and demands justice.”
“Earlier, during the July march in Gopalganj, there was a planned attack on our leaders with the intention to kill. Attempts were also made to attack the leaders of the mass uprising, including Advisor Mahfuj Alam, abroad.”
On Monday, leaders of three political parties, accompanying Muhammad Yunus for the United Nations General Assembly, were targeted.
According to Nahid Islam, members of the NCP, including Secretary General Akhter Hossen and Senior Joint Secretary General Tasnim Jara, were harassed and attacked by the terrorist elements of the Awami League when leaving the airport.
He added, “The government repeatedly talks about justice, but in reality, there is a clear weakness, which is why the Awami League is able to operate with such impunity.
Nahid Islam said, “Officials at various levels of the administration are involved in these incidents, with information being leaked from within. The security measures provided by the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were inadequate.
“This is why Monday’s events took place.”
Nahid presses demands to government
Nahid said, “We are raising some important demands to the government. First, all the perpetrators of Monday’s attack must be quickly identified and arrested. The Consul General in New York must immediately resign, and those responsible for the security failure should be held accountable.”
“Additionally, individuals associated with the Awami League who were appointed during the fascist era in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must be removed from their positions. It is urgent to release the list of five suspects involved in the attack on Adviser Mahfuj Alam.”
He continued, “Second, maximum transparency must be ensured in the trial of the July massacre, and a tribunal must swiftly begin prosecuting the Awami League as a terrorist organisation.
“Third, we will sit down with the Foreign Affairs adviser to investigate the causes of the security failure for our leaders abroad and demand accountability for the controversial appointments within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Furthermore, we demand the administration take active steps to halt the Awami League’s foreign operations.”
Regarding the politics of bringing the Awami League back to power, he stated, “We are making it clear there is no chance for the Awami League to return to power or politics. Those who attempt such a thing will be resisted by the people, and their political presence will be erased from the country’s streets.
Addressing the BNP, Nahid said, “We see the BNP as a partner in the mass uprising and as an ally in the fight against fascism, and we urge them to actively participate in the country’s reconstruction and the judicial process.”
He also mentioned that NCP workers in New York were misled, saying, “Our expatriate supporters were directed down the wrong path. They were told to go through another gate, but later, their path was changed due to negligence by those responsible for protocol and security.”
