Local traders in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira have detained a 15-year-old teenager, named Faisal, with five counterfeit 500-taka banknotes and handed him over to the police.
The incident took place on Thursday at Nawabeki Market, where he was caught red-handed during a cash transaction after purchasing goods from a grocery shop owned by one Shariful.
Faisal, who admitted his involvement with a counterfeit currency ring, is the son of Abdul Jalil from Patkepara village in Paikgachha upazila of Khulna district.
According to Moniruzzaman Moni, secretary of Nawabeki Market Management Committee, the shopkeeper became suspicious when Faisal presented the money for the items purchased at Shariful’s store.
A search was subsequently conducted, recovering a total of five fake 500-taka notes, prompting local traders to gather, detain the youth, and report the matter to the police.
Moni further said that during initial questioning, Faisal confessed to previously making transactions using Tk6,000 in counterfeit notes at another market.
Following the report, a police team from Shyamnagar Police Station arrived at the spot, apprehended the teenager, and brought him to the station.
Confirming the incident, Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shafiul Islam Patwari said Faisal confessed during interrogation to being linked with a fake currency syndicate.
The OC added that a case was registered against Faisal over the incident, and he was subsequently sent to jail through the court along with the seized counterfeit bank notes.
