A three-and-a-half-year-old boy was killed and his nine-year-old sister critically injured after their mother allegedly attacked them with a sharp knife during a family dispute in Tangail’s Sakhipur.
Police detained the mother, Aklema Akter, after the incident at Khaliarbaid area under Barochawna Union around midnight on Wednesday.
The deceased, Ashraful, and injured Sirajatun are the children of Shaheen Mia, a resident of the area.
According to family members and locals, Aklema, Shaheen’s second wife, allegedly attacked the two children while they were asleep with a sharp cake-cutting knife following an argument over family matters.
She later allegedly attempted to harm herself with the same knife.
Family members rescued the injured children and took them to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Ashraful dead.
As Sirajatun’s condition deteriorated, she was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
After the incident, family members reportedly tied Aklema to a pillar inside the house before police arrived and detained her.
She was taken to Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex for treatment before being moved to the police station.
Sakhipur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shaheen said the incident appeared to have occurred over a family dispute.
“The children’s mother has been detained. Legal proceedings are underway,” he said.
