A court on Thursday placed six persons on a two-day remand in a case filed over preparing to commit a robbery in the capital’s Shahbagh area while posing as Detective Branch (DB) police officers.
The remanded accused are Jewel Mridha, 38, Md Rameez Talukder, 46, Jashim Talukder alias Riaz, 46, Md Rahman Howlader, 56, Md Billal, 52, and Md Maruf, 38.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Junaid passed the order following a hearing. Sub-Inspector Shah Alam Miah of the Prosecution Division confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the case investigation officer, DB Sub-Inspector Md Anwar Hossain, produced the accused in court and prayed for a seven-day remand for each.
According to the allegations, on the night of 15 September, a team from the DB Mirpur Division was conducting an operation in the capital and adjacent areas when they learned from a tip off that several miscreants were preparing for a robbery on the pavement opposite the Bangladesh Bar Council under Shahbagh Police Station.
The DB team subsequently conducted a drive at the location and detained the six individuals, who had attempted to flee upon sensing police presence.
Law enforcers recovered a toy pistol, an empty toy magazine, a black toy walkie-talkie, a pair of handcuffs, and three jackets with “DB” written on them from their possession. A case was lodged with Shahbagh Police Station in connection with the incident.
Police stated that the accused had long been committing robberies and muggings across various parts of Dhaka by posing as DB members and utilizing the identity and uniforms of law enforcement agencies.
The remand application noted that taking the accused into custody for interrogation is necessary to unearth detailed information about the gang and to arrest their absconding associates.
