Three people, including the driver, were killed in a head-on collision between a pickup van and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Kalampur-Saturia-Nagarpur regional highway in Dhamrai, Dhaka, on Thursday evening.
The deceased have been identified as the auto-rickshaw driver, Jewel Hossain, of Char Khidir village under Tangail Sadar Police Station; Akhi Akter, daughter of Abul Hossain of Ichhapur village; and Zakaria Hossain, son of Jasim Uddin.
The accident occurred when the Nagarpur-bound auto-rickshaw, carrying passengers from Kalampur, collided head-on with the pickup coming from opposite direction in the Nandeswari Bottola area and plunged into a roadside ditch.
Local residents rescued the driver and two passengers in critical condition from the wreckage and rushed them to the nearby Saturia Upazila Health Complex. All three succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Police Inspector Elias Hossain, in-charge of the Kawalipara Bazar Investigation Centre, confirmed the fatalities.
