Officials have reported that a schoolboy abducted in the capital on Sunday was freed less than 60 minutes after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman personally stepped in, directing law enforcement agencies to take swift action.
Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Atikur Rahman Rumon recounted that the boy’s father, a Secretariat employee, arrived at the Prime Minister’s Office in distress after learning his son had been taken.
He was able to secure a personal meeting with the prime minister and briefed him on the situation.
Upon hearing the details, the prime minister promptly contacted the relevant police authorities, issuing clear instructions to ensure the child’s safe return without delay.
“Within an hour, police rescued the boy from an under-construction building in Khilgaon,” Rumon confirmed.
The teenager, a ninth-grader at Khilgaon’s National Laboratory Ideal School, had been abducted around 2:30pm shortly after leaving school.
Police reports indicate that four to five individuals intercepted him, taking him to a seven-story under-construction building in the Jorapukur area of Khilgaon, where he was reportedly beaten. The captors later called his father, demanding a ransom of Tk50,000 and threatening to kill the boy if the money wasn’t delivered.
Acting on the prime minister’s directive, Ramna Division’s Deputy Police Commissioner Masud Alam used the phone number from the ransom call to contact the abductors, assuring them the payment was on its way. As they negotiated, police managed to pinpoint their whereabouts.
A subsequent raid on the Khilgaon construction site led to the boy’s rescue. The abductors, alerted to the police presence, managed to escape.
Authorities have stated that efforts are currently focused on identifying and apprehending those responsible for the abduction. The rescued child has since been reunited with his family.
