The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday set 20 November for delivering its verdict on an appeal challenging the previous judgement that abolished non-party caretaker government system.
The Appellate Division full bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed the order.
However, the apex court fixed the date after holding hearings on the matter for ten consecutive days.
On 27 August 2025, the Appellate Division granted leave to appeal against its 2011 verdict that had announced the 13th Amendment, which introduced the caretaker government system unconstitutional.
The court came up with the order after hearing several review petitions seeking reinstatement of the 13th Amendment and revival of the caretaker government system.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, five prominent citizens including Shujan Secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, and another person filed a total of four review petitions. All petitions were heard together.
On 17 December 2024, the High Court had pronounced the abolition of the caretaker government system unconstitutional.
