A case has been filed over allegations of occupying government land worth around Tk200 crore in Savar, alongside vandalism, looting, destruction of state property and threats to officials.
The allegation also includes the use of a municipal bulldozer to break the boundary fence. A municipal official was show-caused over the incident on Wednesday.
The case was filed at Savar Model Police Station by Md Joydul Hossain, acting land assistant officer of Bagdhonia Land Office.
He named around 150 hawkers as accused in the case and submitted eight photographs as evidence.
In the complaint, he said that 2 acres and 17 decimals of government land in Small Balimeher mouza under Savar Model Police Station, near Savar Model Mosque, was fenced with a tin boundary wall. He alleged that on Monday afternoon, 140 to 150 hawkers entered the site and broke around 100 feet of the tin fence. They removed and looted tin sheets from the boundary, causing an estimated loss of around Tk8 lakh.
He also stated that in the Horticulture Centre and Rajalakh Farm area, another part of the same government land was also encroached. There, the attackers allegedly broke about 100 feet of tin boundary and took away tin sheets worth around Tk40,000.
Local sources, however, said the current market value of the entire land is about Tk200 crore.
The case further says that when land office officials reached the spot, the accused behaved aggressively and threatened them. They also warned of further damage if prevented from conducting business on the government land.
The land administration said the site has future plans for a Liberation War Complex and a proposed Upazila Land Office.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arman Ali said police identified those involved and recovered stolen tin sheets.
Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and municipal administrator Md Saiful Islam said the use of a municipal bulldozer is under investigation. He confirmed that Conservancy Inspector Md Selim Ahmed has been show-caused and asked to reply within three working days.
He added that a probe committee will be formed on Monday, 18 May. Further action will be taken based on the committee’s findings.
