A former secretary, Md Sarwar Alam, has been given a fresh one-year contractual appointment as the press secretary to the president.
The directive was confirmed through an official order from the Ministry of Public Administration issued on Tuesday.
As detailed in the order, the appointment falls under Section 49 of the Government Service Act, 2018, with the stipulation that “he severs ties with any other profession, business or employment with government, semi-government or private organisations.”
His tenure in this contractual role will officially begin on the day he assumes the position.
This marks a return to the role for Sarwar Alam, who was initially appointed as press secretary to President Mohammad Shahabuddin on a two-year contract with secretary-level rank on 23 December 2024. That tenure was subsequently cut short by the interim government.
A member of the 1985 BCS Information Cadre, Sarwar’s background includes a stint as deputy press secretary for former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
His career also includes positions as secretary (public relations) for the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and executive director (joint secretary) at the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority.
Prior to going on post-retirement leave in February 2022, he was serving as director (joint secretary) at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority.
