Marvel Studios has officially announced that a new Ghost Rider film is in development, with Ryan Gosling set to play the iconic supernatural anti-hero and Shawn Levy attached to direct, reports Marvel.
The surprise announcement came during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that the film will arrive in cinemas in 2028.
Introducing the project, Feige joked that fans had spent years asking when Ghost Rider—and Gosling—would finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Gosling then took the stage to a standing ovation, telling fans the role had long been a personal dream.
“Wow, is this really happening? As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time,” he said.
The actor also revealed that there was only one filmmaker who wanted to bring the Spirit of Vengeance to the big screen before inviting Shawn Levy on stage.
Levy, who previously directed Marvel Studios’ blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, is currently working with Gosling on the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, scheduled for release in May 2027.
Speaking to fans, Levy said the idea for Ghost Rider grew out of conversations between the pair while filming the Star Wars project.
“As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing,” Levy said. “And I finally said, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’ So guys, we’ll see you in 2028.”
Ghost Rider is one of Marvel’s most recognisable supernatural characters, known for his flaming skull, motorcycle and ability to punish the guilty with his mystical powers.
While previous live-action films featured Nicolas Cage in the title role, this marks the character’s first standalone outing within the MCU.
Marvel Studios has not yet revealed plot details, additional cast members or an official release date beyond its planned 2028 theatrical debut.
