Two police constables were injured in an attack while attempting to arrest a suspect in the Ambagan rail gate area of Khulshi, Chattogram.
Khulshi police raided the area around 10pm Saturday on a tip‑off and arrested listed criminal and drug dealer Alamgir Hossain with weapons.
As he was being detained, his associates attacked the police, stabbing two constables. Both were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where constable Mubinul Islam’s condition was reported critical.
A joint operation continued until 7am Sunday, though the number of arrests was not immediately known. Chattogram Metropolitan Police spokesperson Aminur Rashid said Alamgir was in custody, but his associates escaped.
The law enforcers from Khulshi, Pahartali, and Akbarshah stations carried out coordinated raids overnight to capture them. Additional forces were deployed and searches conducted at multiple locations to restore order.
Local residents reported hearing repeated gunshots in Ambagan after the operation, sparking panic. Shopkeepers quickly shut their businesses.
Police said Alamgir faces multiple cases involving weapons, drugs, and robbery, and had long controlled the drug trade in Lal Khan Bazar, Ambagan, Khulshi, and Rail Crossing areas. Efforts to arrest him had been ongoing for months.
As of 9am Sunday, police had not released details on casualties or other damage from the gunfire during the operation.
