A man and his nephew were killed after being struck by lightning while fishing in a haor in Karimganj upazila of Kishoreganj on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 7am in Chongnoagaon haor under Sutarpara Union.

The deceased were identified as Shah Alam, 38, son of late Ishak Miah, and his nephew Mokarram Hossain, 24, son of Nazrul Islam. Both were residents of Chongnoagaon village.

Locals said Shah Alam and Mokarram went to the haor near their village with fishing nets in the morning. As light rain and lightning began, both were struck and died instantly.

When they failed to return home and the weather worsened, relatives began searching around 10am. Their bodies were later found lying in knee‑deep water in the haor, and police were informed.

Residents said Mokarram worked at a garment factory in Dhaka and had recently returned home on leave to get married. Shah Alam was employed as a labourer on boats transporting paddy.

Confirming the incident, Md Soheb Khan, officer‑in‑charge of Karimganj Police Station, said police were sent to the scene after receiving information. He added that necessary legal procedures are underway.
