Eid-ul-Fitr has emerged as a unique symbol of joy, unity, and cultural identity for the Bangladeshi expatriate community residing in the Italian capital.
With a population of over 50,000 Bangladeshis in Rome and its suburbs, the city is recognised as the most densely Bangladeshi-populated urban centre in the European Union.
This vibrant community continues to contribute significantly to the economic progress of Bangladesh while enriching the economic and social fabric of Italy.
Ramadan and community spirit
Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, the majority of Bangladeshi expatriates observe fasting despite their demanding work schedules, breaking their fast in the evenings with family and fellow community members.
In Bangladeshi-inhabited areas such as Vittorio, Torpignattara, and Montagnola, various political, social, and cultural organisations arrange Iftar parties.
These gatherings attract participation from Muslims of different nationalities, other immigrants, and local Italian citizens, playing a vital role in fostering mutual respect, empathy, and social harmony among the diverse residents of Rome.

Economic significance
The celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr also adds a new dimension to the economic relationship between expatriates and their homeland.
On the occasion of the festival, Bangladeshi migrants send additional remittances to their families, providing a substantial boost to the national economy.
Additionally, many expatriates save their allocated leave to visit Bangladesh during Eid to share the joy with their relatives, which further contributes positively to the local economy.
Eid day traditions
On the day of Eid, congregational prayers are organised by the Bangladeshi and other Muslim communities in various mosques and open spaces across the city.
Expatriates attend these prayers with their families; however, those for whom Eid falls on a working day often proceed to their jobs immediately after the service.
The prayer venues serve as a major meeting point where community members exchange greetings and embraces.
In the afternoon, “Eid Reunion” programmes are held in various parks and open spaces, featuring traditional Bangladeshi cuisine and cultural performances.
Cultural integration and diplomacy
These celebrations are not confined to the Bangladeshi community but offer local Italians an opportunity to engage with Bangladeshi culture, food, attire, and social traditions, thereby enriching Italy’s multicultural environment.
These events facilitate increased communication between expatriates, the local administration, and civil society, enhancing social cohesion.
By celebrating Eid, Bangladeshi expatriates in Rome showcase their heritage and project a message of religious beauty, cultural liberalisation, and harmony to the global community, aiding their integration into the mainstream Italian social structure.
