Bangladesh received $1.788 billion in workers’ remittances in the first 16 days of August, up 41.4 per cent from $1.264 billion a year earlier, boosting foreign-exchange inflows at the start of FY2026-27.

Expatriate Bangladeshis sent $289 million between 13 and 16 August alone, according to Bangladesh Bank data.

Total remittances reached $4.647 billion from July 1 to August 16, up $905 million, or 24.2 per cent, from $3.742 billion in the same period last year.

The strong inflow is providing support to Bangladesh’s foreign-exchange reserves and external sector as the economy continues to face pressure on dollar liquidity.

The data also indicate sustained use of formal channels by expatriate Bangladeshis to send money home.

Higher remittance inflows are supporting recipient households’ purchasing power and could provide some support to domestic consumption at a time when economic growth remains weak.

Maintaining the momentum will be important for Bangladesh, as remittances provide a relatively stable source of foreign currency to help meet import and other external-payment needs.
